BURYING THE BARRIOS

BURYING THE BARRIOS

By Saraí Chavarrí

Sadness walked into the barrios & decided to make it its home

It invited Anger

Who so gleefully demanded to leave its lasting imprints in the barrios

How else will people know I was here?!

See me! Feel me!

Nurture grew from the tilled soils that Angers fiery rage left behind

There there..

I see you

You matter

She caresses Sadness & Anger

But even Nurture turns its caring head when Addiction is born

Nothing can stop the warmth Addiction leaves behind-

It preys on all three.

You need me

You are me

It plays its song & dance

Until -

Darkness falls in the barrios

It leaves behind its footprints with loss

All that is left are human remains

After it swallows the spirits of the barrios whole.

In the crevices you can find Grief

If you’re quiet you can hear her gently weep in the dead of night -

After the gunshots..after the sirens;

She haunts all corridors, all roads, all lots.

But unbeknownst to all actors

If you’re quiet you can hear her gently weep in the dead of night-

Hope has found her way inside

No one can quite understand how she exists there

How she found her way

How she decided to stay

How she is able to sway;

Resilience & Strength tow in hand

in the barrios

They protect Hopes walkways

Always guarding..

Always present..

Hope has a way of finding the light

In all that can be dark & gray in the barrios.

I wish you all could see this beautiful juxtaposition as they dance together;

As they heal together.

Their lights burning ever so bright

All of the pictures they paint -

Are the images of the stolen dreams left behind

For all to bask in its unique and glorious beauty

Si ellos no estuvieran endlessly & intoxicatingly lusting for burying the barrios

Resilience & Strength tow in hand
