COLORES DE SAN JOSÉ

COLORES DE SAN JOSÉ

By Estella Inda

Imagine a place surrounded by lush green mountains. A place where the wind carries the smell of the fragrant fruit growing, causing your mouth to water. A place full of colors from the vast amount of plants and trees growing. A place full of opportunity.

San José was that place for many. Before the developments and before the gentrification, much of Santa Clara County including San José was made up of rich farmlands and orchards. Full of apples, pears, cherries, apricots, prunes and more. Thanks to the valley’s rich soil and ideal climate, agricultural wealth is what helped the area to grow and blossom.

Before the developments and before the gentrification, much of Santa Clara County including San José was made up of rich farmlands and orchards.

For this reason, many found themselves drawn to the area, with dreams of opportunity and the chance to prosper. The potential caused San José to grow in popularity, as those seeking a better life would find themselves following the harvests throughout the state. Mystified by the agricultural wonders, they would move their family from ranch to ranch.

As the city grew, the agricultural industry flourished, helping the city to become the distribution hub for the valley. This created new employment opportunities for those that settled in the area to work in the canneries processing fruit that was being harvested out on the ranches.
