EL SONIDO DE NUESTRA GENTE

El SONIDO
DE NUESTRA GENTE

By Elizabeth Marquez Bernardino

I have the privilege to work at a school on the East Side of San José.

Every day, I hear all sorts of sounds from nuestra gente.

I hear children laughing as they run past me hand in hand con sus amigos.

I hear the ringing of bells from familiar street vendors as they wait for our dismissal time.

I hear parents happily greeting each other and sharing chisme from their day.

I hear staff sharing about how their day went and the tasks they have left to do.

I hear music that plays from cars as they drive past the school.

I have the privilege of being a Community Organizer on the East Side of San José.

Every day, I hear parents bravely sharing their testimonios.

I hear the tristeza y frustración in their voices over the injusticia that their families experience.

I hear the determination in their voices as they frequently meet para aprendar y desarrollarse.

I hear the inteligencia in their voices as they analyze community issues and potential solutions.

I hear the strength in their voices as they share their historias and experiencias reales.

I hear the hope in their voices as they work together para hacer cambios en su comunidad.

We often take for granted the everyday sounds at our schools created by our comunidad. Sonidos de nuestra gente are filled with joy, care, and familiarity, which motivates our parent leaders to continue advocating for positive changes for all.
