A CREED ON POTENCY
A CREED ON POTENCY
By Jinji Sayson
How can you turn the tide when you’re just a drop in the ocean?
At one point in my early twenties, I worked for an anti-racism non-profit organization. I was newly radicalized, and incensed by what I learned in a class entitled “Riots and Revolution” I’d taken at San José State University, and looking for a tangible way to become active within my community.
“I was newly radicalized, and incensed by what I learned in a class...”
And although I was brimming with energy, and wholly inspired to enact meaningful change, at the time I still had not realized the strength of my own power(s), or taken ownership of them just yet—not in the way(s) I need to anyway.
Yes, we need to build community, and absolutely, we all need each other to build a better world; but I wanted to emphasize here, that you do not have to wait until you have a mob, or have gathered hundreds of people to act for change because just you, using your voice, challenging the status quo, is already making a difference.
“...you do not have to wait until you have a mob....to act for change.”
The epiphany is forever embedded in my life philosophy, and stirs my spirit when I remember this truth: I, like everyone else on this earth, possess an innate power, my voice, which can transform our own immediate spheres of influence: all we need to do, is take responsibility for it.
Yes, without community of like-minded people you may be crusading alone in your cause for a time and so you may not be able to create a tidal wave—but you can create a ripple.
“I, like everyone else on this earth, possess an innate power, my voice.”
