HONORING HERITAGE THROUGH HUSTLE
By Jessica Ortiz
I've been a chef for 11 years, and my journey is deeply rooted in my heritage and community. My culinary journey started unexpectedly. Friends invited me to a job fair, where I landed a kitchen job with weekends off and good pay. It was a rare opportunity, and they offered me the position on my birthday. That marked the beginning of my cooking career, and 11 years later, I'm still in the industry, promoting my brand. My heritage and community have played a significant role in shaping my culinary style.
Living on Higate Drive was a unique experience. I lived here until I was 22 when we had to sell the house after my grandmother passed away. She left it to her eight children; her sacrifices gave us a better life in the U.S. My grandmother, an immigrant from Mexico, created a family- oriented environment where everyone gathered. Our house was always bustling with laughing relatives playing Loteria in the living room. It was never quiet, and I cherish those vibrant memories. I attended Mount Pleasant High School with my cousins, even though I was supposed to go to Overfelt. Being the youngest, they often included me in their activities, making me feel part of the extensive family.
My grandmother's legacy is a beacon of strength and resilience that I strive to honor. She crossed the border, braving countless challenges to provide us with a better life. Her story is a testament to the power of determination and sacrifice. I want to represent her strength and sacrifice through my work, and this inspiration led to the creation of my Higate logo, symbolizing my roots and family. Her influence remains a significant part of my identity, a constant reminder of the strength that lies within us. Despite the obstacles, we must stay focused on our goals, maintain a positive mindset, and strive for the dream life many like her envisioned for their families.
Surviving in the Bay Area is challenging, often requiring two jobs. I've chosen to work hard for myself rather than someone else, pushing my products, catering service, Agua de Tiburon, CBD lotions, and flower arrangements. I wanted to represent San José and my Mexican background when creating my Agua de Tiburon logo. I brainstormed with my team and devised a shark design to honor where we're from. Everything I do is a testament to my hustle and desire to represent my heritage. I've always been 420-friendly, fueling my creativity and giving me a unique perspective.
Growing up on the East Side of San José, you learn resilience. It's a place where nothing is given to you, and you must hustle to succeed. The area is known for its challenges, like police profiling, but it also fosters a strong community spirit. I've witnessed the good and bad, but I love the sense of belonging it instills. The challenges I faced growing up in this community have shaped my resilience and determination, and they continue to inspire me in my entrepreneurial journey.
