UN SALUDO A NUESTROS HÉROES LOCALES

By Vanessa (Pfox) Palafox

Ruby and Hector run Frutas Regionales Magui, a family- owned business in the Mexican Heritage Plaza's King Road parking lot.

On a hot summer day I like to turn to a cup of fresh coconut water with lemon and sliced pulp, or a mangonada con piña. However, whatever you choose, it won’t sit on ice for a while. Regional Fruit prides itself on providing quality produce and wants to serve you a tu gusto. Slice by slice, your order is assembled right before your eyes.

I asked the family a few questions, which is what Hector had to say:

“For us, the fruit business was more than just a hobby or a side project. It was a dream we were determined to turn into reality. When construction work was scarce, I started selling strawberries and oranges out of my van. With each sale, we saved up to purchase our first trailer in installments. It was a nerve-wracking time, especially with our first child, Cindy, on the way. But we took the leap, and it’s been a rewarding journey ever since.

“We all have a responsibility to provide for our families regardless of our status. Whether we are immigrants or citizens, starting your own business, going to school, and getting involved is essential. I want our customers to feel at ease and know we will care for them. Our commitment to quality and freshness is unwavering, and we hope you come back because of it.”

“We were in the middle of a recession, and by the grace of God, El Grullo off San Antonio and King permitted us to sell fruit in their lot. And we eventually worked with La Plaza and enjoyed working at the festivals. This job is not for the faint of heart. We get tired, and people think it’s an easy job assembling fruit, but there’s a lot of work that goes into handling produce and ensuring its freshness and quality, and many variables impact us. Our whole family pitches to keep the business running, and family and friends support us when we can't be here.”

Héctor and Ruby, parents of four beautiful young ladies, are a reliable, honest, and community-focused family. They can be found at the Plaza’s major signature events or catering fresh fruit for meetings, conferences, parties, and other gatherings. Their presence in the community is a testament to their commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and connection. They usually pop up in the King Road lot from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Let them know we sent you!
