LAS JERICALLAS

LAS JERICALLAS

By Anna Sanchez

Jericallas! Don't forget to stop by and get some from la señora del mercado! My Mamá tells me every time I go back to her tierra, Tlaquepaque.

Every year, she's there. Her voice is deep as the roots we share shouting, jericallas!

Her hands are strong as the bond we share through the traditional Tapatío dessert.

Growing up, I'd visit Tlaquepaque often with my Abuela, we'd take them borderland goods and bring back quesos frescos, dulces, and jericallas, which reminded me of everything we could no longer have in our new world.

Don’t forget to stop by and get some from la señora del mercado!

New world I say, because the borderland living is no longer the same as that of a small pueblo, where everyone greets you with a smile, where people are humble and rooted. In this new world, most people are no longer living but more like surviving. Everyone is busy, even my Abuela and Mamá.

Perhaps, even now 30 years after my Mamá still asks me to bring her back jericallas. To remind her that although miles apart, someone still makes her favorite childhood dessert and shares the traditions and love she grew up with.

Visiting Tlaquepaque now, is no longer the same as my Abuela is no longer with us. Still her spirit lives through stories, through recipes and through jericallas.
