Wherever there are systems of oppression, there are forms of resilience. Everyone has a sly friend or playful uncle that has told them a spooky story at some point. Ghost stories serve not only as a coping method for the unexplained but also as an unexpected instrument for unity.

San Hauntse: Mysteries of San José is a local podcast that was started in October 2020 by San José natives Manuel Ávalos and Carmen Sánchez. Each week, the two research a different urban legend of the South Bay Area and discuss it in podcast format—complete with original music, sound bites from speakers, and bonus social media content. San Hauntse began as a way for the two podcast hosts (and best friends) to connect with each other and cope with the hardship and distancing of the COVID-19 pandemic. Both have been long-time fans of horror and jumped at the chance to celebrate San José’s history and spooky stories.
