Name her Esperanza
Not for hope’s sake
Give her a name
To yell when she isn’t listening
To curl and prick like bush thorns
Name her Esperanza
It makes for big tattoos
Wants for softness
But falls too bold off the tongue
Name her Esperanza
Let her rumble through it
She’ll unsettle bones
Like passing thunder
Long enough to grow into
Settle her spine into
Name her Esperanza
Not for hope
But for what it takes
